Psalms 39

Psalm 39 ESV

David's care not to offend with his tongue: 4his reflections upon the shortness and vanity of human life, which lead him to hope in God: 8he prayeth for pardon and comfort before his death.
To the choirmaster: to 1Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.
I said, “I will 1guard my ways, that I 2may not sin with my tongue; I will 3guard my mouth with a muzzle, so long as the wicked are in my presence.”
I was 1mute and silent; I held my peace to no avail, and my distress grew worse.
My 1heart became hot within me. As I mused, the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue:
“O Lord, 1make me know my end and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting I am!
Behold, you have made my days a few handbreadths, and 1my lifetime is as nothing before you. Surely 2all mankind stands as a mere breath! Selah
Surely a man 1goes about as a shadow! Surely for nothinga they are in turmoil; man 2heaps up wealth and does not know who will gather!
“And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? 1My hope is in you.
Deliver me from all my transgressions. 1Do not make me the scorn of the fool!
1I am mute; I do not open my mouth, 2for it is you who have done it.
1Remove your stroke from me; I am spent by the hostility of your hand.
When you discipline a man with 1rebukes for sin, you 2consume like a 3moth what is dear to him; 4surely all mankind is a mere breath! Selah
1“Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear to my cry; hold not your peace at my tears! For I am 2a sojourner with you, 3a guest, like all my fathers.
1Look away from me, that I may smile again, 2before I depart and 3am no more!”
