Psalms 49

Psalm 49 ESV

The Psalmist calleth upon all the earth to join him in his meditations: 5he sheweth the vanity of trusting in worldly wealth.
To the choirmaster. A Psalm of 1the Sons of Korah.
1Hear this, all peoples! Give ear, all inhabitants of the world,
1both low and high, rich and poor together!
My mouth shall speak 1wisdom; the meditation of my heart shall be understanding.
I will incline my ear to 1a proverb; I will solve my 2riddle to the music of the lyre.
1Why should I fear in 2times of trouble, when the iniquity of those who cheat me surrounds me,
those who 1trust in their wealth and boast of the abundance of their riches?
Truly no man 1can ransom another, or 2give to God 3the price of his life,
for 1the ransom of their life is costly and can never suffice,
that he should live on forever and 1never see the pit.
For he sees 1that even the wise die; 2the fool and the stupid alike must perish and 3leave their wealth to others.
Their 1graves are their homes forever,a their dwelling places 2to all generations, though they 3called lands by their own names.
Man in his pomp 1will not remain; 2he is like the beasts that perish.
This is the path of those who have 1foolish confidence; yet after them people approve of their boasts.a Selah
Like sheep they are appointed for Sheol; death shall be their shepherd, and the upright 1shall rule over them in the morning. 2Their form shall be consumed 3in Sheol, with no place to dwell.
But God will 1ransom my soul from the power of Sheol, for he will 2receive me. Selah
Be not afraid when a man becomes rich, when the glory of his house increases.
1For when he dies he will 2carry nothing away; his glory will not go down after him.
For though, while he lives, he counts himself 1blessed —and though you get praise when you do well for yourself—
his soul will 1go to the generation of his fathers, who will never again 2see light.
1Man in his pomp yet without understanding is like the beasts that perish.
