Psalms 51

Psalm 51 ESV

David prayeth for remission of his sins, whereof he maketh a deep confession: 16he prayeth God to sanctify him. 16God delighteth not in sacrifice, but in contrition of heart: 18David prayeth for the welfare of the church.
To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David, when 1Nathan the prophet went to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.
1Have mercy on me,a O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your 2abundant mercy 3blot out my transgressions.
1Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and 2cleanse me from my sin!
1For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.
1Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil 2in your sight, 3so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.
Behold, 1I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.
Behold, you delight in truth in 1the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.
Purge me 1with hyssop, and I shall be clean; 2wash me, and I shall be 3whiter than snow.
Let me hear joy and gladness; 1let the bones 2that you have broken rejoice.
1Hide your face from my sins, and 2blot out all my iniquities.
1Create in me a 2clean heart, O God, and 3renew a righta spirit within me.
1Cast me not away from your presence, and take not 2your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.
Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will 1return to you.
Deliver me from 1bloodguiltiness, O God, O 2God of my salvation, and 3my tongue will sing aloud of your 4righteousness.
O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise.
1For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering.
The sacrifices of God are 1a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
1Do good to Zion in your good pleasure; 2build up the walls of Jerusalem;
then will you delight in 1right sacrifices, in burnt offerings and 2whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on your altar.
