Psalms 74

Psalm 74 ESV

The Psalmist complaineth of the desolation of the sanctuary: 10he moveth God to help in consideration of his power, 18of the reproach of the enemies, 19and of his church and covenant.
A Maskila of 1Asaph.
O God, why do you 1cast us off forever? Why does your anger 2smoke against 3the sheep of your pasture?
1Remember your congregation, which you have 2purchased of old, which you have 3redeemed to be 4the tribe of your heritage! Remember Mount Zion, 5where you have dwelt.
Direct your steps to 1the perpetual ruins; the enemy has destroyed everything in the sanctuary!
Your foes have 1roared in the midst of your meeting place; 2they set up their 3own signs for 4signs.
They were like those who swing 1axes in a forest of trees.a
And all its 1carved wood they broke down with hatchets and hammers.
They 1set your sanctuary on fire; they 2profaned 3the dwelling place of your name, bringing it down to the ground.
They 1said to themselves, “We will utterly subdue them”; they burned all the meeting places of God in the land.
We do not see our 1signs; 2there is no longer any prophet, and there is none among us who knows how long.
How long, O God, 1is the foe to scoff? Is the enemy to revile your name forever?
Why 1do you hold back your hand, your right hand? Take it from the fold of your garmenta and destroy them!
Yet 1God my King is from of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth.
You 1divided the sea by your might; you 2broke the heads of 3the sea monstersa on the waters.
You crushed the heads of 1Leviathan; you gave him as food for the creatures of the wilderness.
You 1split open springs and brooks; you 2dried up ever-flowing streams.
Yours is the day, yours also the night; you have established 1the heavenly lights and the sun.
You have 1fixed all the boundaries of the earth; you have made 2summer and winter.
1Remember this, O Lord, how the enemy scoffs, and 2a foolish people reviles your name.
Do not deliver the soul of your 1dove to the wild beasts; 2do not forget the life of your poor forever.
Have regard for 1the covenant, for 2the dark places of the land are full of the habitations of violence.
Let not 1the downtrodden 2turn back in shame; let 3the poor and needy praise your name.
Arise, O God, 1defend your cause; 2remember how the foolish scoff at you all the day!
Do not forget the clamor of your foes, 1the uproar of those who rise against you, which goes up continually!
