Psalms 79

Psalm 79 ESV

The Psalmist complaineth of the desolation of Jerusalem: 8he prayeth for deliverance, 13and promiseth thankfulness.
A Psalm of 1Asaph.
O God, 1the nations have come into your 2inheritance; they have defiled your 3holy temple; they have 4laid Jerusalem in ruins.
They have given 1the bodies of your servants to the birds of the heavens for food, the flesh of your 2faithful to 3the beasts of the earth.
They have poured out their blood like water all around Jerusalem, and there was 1no one to bury them.
We have become 1a taunt to our neighbors, 2mocked and derided by those around us.
1How long, O Lord? Will you be angry 2forever? Will your 3jealousy 4burn like fire?
1Pour out your anger on the nations that 2do not know you, and on the kingdoms that 3do not call upon your name!
For they have devoured Jacob and laid waste his habitation.
1Do not remember against us 2our former iniquities;a let your compassion come speedily to meet us, for we are 3brought very low.
1Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of your name; deliver us, and 2atone for our sins, for your 3name's sake!
1Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?” Let 2the avenging of the outpoured blood of your servants be known among the nations before our eyes!
Let 1the groans of the prisoners come before you; according to your great power, preserve those 2doomed to die!
Return 1sevenfold into the 2lap of our neighbors the 3taunts with which they have taunted you, O Lord!
But we your people, the 1sheep of your pasture, will 2give thanks to you forever; from generation to generation we will recount your praise.
