Psalms 89

Psalm 89 ESV

The Psalmist praiseth God for his covenanted mercies to David: 5for his mighty power, and moral perfections: 15for his care of his people: 19for his promised favour to the kingdom of David: 38then complaining of contrary events, 46he expostulateth, prayeth, and in the end blesseth God.
A Maskila of 1Ethan the Ezrahite.
1I will sing of 2the steadfast love of the Lord, forever; with my mouth I will make known your 3faithfulness to all generations.
For I said, 1“Steadfast love will be built up forever; in the heavens 2you will establish your 3faithfulness.”
You have said, “I have made 1a covenant with my 2chosen one; I have 3sworn to David my servant:
‘I will establish your 1offspring forever, and build your 2throne for all generations.’” Selah
Let 1the heavens praise your 2wonders, O Lord, your faithfulness in the assembly of 3the holy ones!
For 1who in the skies can be compared to the Lord? 2Who among the heavenly beingsa is like the Lord,
a God greatly 1to be feared in the council of 2the holy ones, and awesome above all 3who are around him?
O Lord God of hosts, 1who is mighty as you are, O 2Lord, with your faithfulness all around you?
You rule the raging of the sea; when its waves rise, you 1still them.
You 1crushed 2Rahab like a carcass; you 3scattered your enemies with your mighty arm.
1The heavens are yours; the earth also is yours; 2the world and all that is in it, you have 3founded them.
1The north and the south, you have created them; 2Tabor and 3Hermon 4joyously praise your name.
You have a mighty arm; strong is your hand, high your right hand.
1Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; 2steadfast love and faithfulness go before you.
Blessed are the people who know 1the festal shout, who walk, O Lord, in 2the light of your face,
who exult in your 1name all the day and in your righteousness are 2exalted.
For you are 1the glory of their strength; by your favor our 2horn is exalted.
For our 1shield belongs to the Lord, our king to 2the Holy One of Israel.
1Of old you spoke in a vision to your godly one,a and said: “I have 2granted help to one who is 3mighty; I have exalted one 4chosen from the people.
1I have found David, my servant; with my holy oil I have 2anointed him,
so that my 1hand shall be established with him; my arm also shall strengthen him.
The enemy shall not outwit him; 1the wicked shall not humble him.
I will 1crush his foes before him and strike down those who hate him.
My 1faithfulness and my 2steadfast love shall be with him, and in my name shall his 3horn be exalted.
I will set his hand on 1the sea and his right hand on 2the rivers.
He shall cry to me, ‘You are my 1Father, my God, and 2the Rock of my salvation.’
And I will make him the 1firstborn, 2the highest of the kings of the earth.
My steadfast love I will keep for him forever, and my 1covenant will stand firma for him.
I will establish his 1offspring forever and his 2throne as 3the days of the heavens.
1If his children forsake my law and do not walk according to my rules,a
if they violate my statutes and do not keep my commandments,
then I will punish their transgression with 1the rod and their iniquity with stripes,
but I will not remove from him my steadfast love or be false to my faithfulness.
I will not violate my 1covenant or alter the word that went forth from my lips.
Once for all I have sworn 1by my holiness; I will not 2lie to David.
His 1offspring shall endure forever, 2his 3throne as long as 4the sun before me.
Like 1the moon it shall be established forever, 2a faithful witness in the skies.” Selah
But now you have 1cast off and rejected; you are full of wrath against your 2anointed.
You have 1renounced 2the covenant with your servant; you have 3defiled his 4crown in the dust.
You have 1breached all his walls; you have laid his strongholds in ruins.
1All who pass by plunder him; he has become 2the scorn of his neighbors.
You have exalted the right hand of his foes; you have made all his enemies rejoice.
You have also turned back the edge of his sword, and you have not made him stand in battle.
You have made his splendor to cease and cast his throne to the ground.
You have cut short 1the days of his youth; you have 2covered him with shame. Selah
1How long, O Lord? Will you hide yourself forever? How long will your wrath 2burn like fire?
1Remember 2how short my 3time is! For what vanity you have created all the children of man!
1What man can live and never 2see death? Who can deliver his soul from the power of 3Sheol? Selah
Lord, where is your 1steadfast love of old, which by your 2faithfulness you swore to David?
1Remember, O Lord, how your servants are mocked, and how I bear in my 2heart the insultsa of all the many nations,
with which your enemies mock, O Lord, with which they mock 1the footsteps of your 2anointed.
1Blessed be the Lord forever! Amen and Amen.
