Psalms 69

Psalm 69 ESV

David complaineth of his affliction: 7, 19and of the reproach and insults of his enemies: 13he prayeth for deliverance: 22he devoteth his enemies to destruction: 30he engageth to praise God with thanksgiving. 34The whole creation is called upon to praise God for his goodness to the church.
To the choirmaster: according to 1Lilies. Of David.
Save me, O God! For 1the waters have come up to my neck.a
I sink in deep 1mire, where there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and the flood 2sweeps over me.
1I am weary with my crying out; 2my throat is parched. 3My eyes grow dim with 4waiting for my God.
1More in number than the hairs of my head are 2those who hate me 3without cause; mighty are those who would destroy me, 4those who attack me with lies. What I did not steal must I now restore?
O God, you know my folly; the wrongs I have done are not hidden from you.
Let not those who hope in you 1be put to shame through me, O Lord God of hosts; let not those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me, O God of Israel.
For it is 1for your sake that I have borne reproach, that dishonor has covered my face.
I have become 1a stranger to my brothers, an alien to my mother's sons.
For 1zeal for your house has consumed me, and 2the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.
When I wept and humbleda my soul with fasting, it became my reproach.
When I made 1sackcloth my clothing, I became 2a byword to them.
I am the talk of those who 1sit in the gate, and the drunkards make 2songs about me.
But as for me, my 1prayer is to you, O Lord. At 2an acceptable time, O God, in the abundance of your steadfast love answer me in your saving faithfulness.
Deliver me from sinking in 1the mire; 2let me be delivered from my enemies and from 3the deep waters.
Let not the flood sweep over me, or the deep swallow me up, or 1the pit close 2its mouth over me.
Answer me, O Lord, for your 1steadfast love is good; according to your abundant 2mercy, 3turn to me.
1Hide not your face from your servant, 2for I am in distress; 3make haste to answer me.
Draw near to my soul, redeem me; ransom me because of my enemies!
You know my 1reproach, and my shame and my dishonor; my foes are all known to you.
1Reproaches have broken my heart, so that I am in 2despair. I 3looked for 4pity, but there was none, and for 5comforters, but I found none.
They gave me 1poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me 2sour wine to drink.
1Let their own 2table before them become a snare; 3and when they are at peace, let it become a trap.a
1Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see, 2and make their loins tremble continually.
Pour out your indignation upon them, and let your burning anger overtake them.
1May their camp be a desolation; let no one dwell in their tents.
For they 1persecute him whom 2you have struck down, and they recount the pain of 3those you have wounded.
1Add to them punishment upon punishment; may they have no acquittal from you.a
Let them be 1blotted out of the book of the living; let them not be 2enrolled among the righteous.
But I am afflicted and in pain; let your salvation, O God, 1set me on high!
I will 1praise the name of God with a song; I will 2magnify him with 3thanksgiving.
This will 1please the Lord more than an ox or a bull 2with horns and hoofs.
When 1the humble see it they will be glad; you who seek God, 2let your hearts revive.
For the Lord hears the needy and 1does not despise his own people who are prisoners.
Let 1heaven and earth praise him, the seas and everything that moves in them.
For 1God will save Zion and build up the cities of Judah, and people shall dwell there and possess it;
1the offspring of his servants shall inherit it, and those who love his name shall dwell in it.
